Personal Statement

My life goal is to design my life. Every aspect of it which of course includes the tools I use, the house I live in, the cars that I drive and software that I use, the medications that I take… I don’t want to design only the outside, but to understand the true use of an “object” and design and re-design “it” to fit the public’s needs with proper design principles and cautions in mind. I would like to share my experience with you as to how I found and shaped my life goals. Sometimes the daily mundane objects that we use can prompt us to make the best inventions. I used my high school agenda everyday and at every occasion. Soon enough, I saw its limitations and my innovations prompted me to redesign it. I took off the binding, cut off two pockets of a duo-tang and a piece of fabric and re-assembled the agenda with additional paper, references, pockets and even TTC maps. I personalized the agenda to function as a planner, notebook, diary, and a source of motivation. The redesigning of the agenda was my first steps towards thinking and acting like an engineer. I noticed the problem, discussed with others, came up with solutions, sketched a blueprint, took measurements, sought materials and made the new and improved system and product. I enjoyed the entire process, for I was satisfied to have utilized my brain to think critically and creatively to solve a problem that would benefit me and others. The best part was applying my knowledge acquired in other fields such as fashion and math to make this product and seeing it being effective in real life.

Leadership Information

After experiencing the pain and inconvenience of having a cast, I realized that this discomfort was what people with disabilities experienced every day, yet most of them excelled. I founded the Dan-Sing Club to share my passion for dance and to demonstrate to others that we should never take physical integrity for granted. I taught dance routines to others and performed in the community. This club did not only boost the students’ confidence and improve their technique; it also created strong persona and bonds among the members. From there, we were able to perform as a team and win a break-dance competition. As a founding member of the St. James Town Youth Council, I attended monthly meetings and committed to various sub-committees in order to tackle the issues in our community. I was surprised at how few events were held in our community and how talented the youth immigrants are. For the past two summers, I took a lead role in organizing two successful youth talent shows. I searched for sponsors, designed posters, held auditions and contacted rental companies. Each year, more than 20 youth participated and over 600 residents came out to enjoy the performances and the closeness of our community. In March, I was very involved in my school and community including chairing the Me to We Club, teaching at the Dan-Sing Club, editing the yearbook and organizing events for the youth council. Despite the strong demands, I unwaveringly chose to try something that I have always wanted to do. I designed, choreographed and modeled for my school’s fashion show. I sew garments, remixed music and choreographed dance routines. I worked extra hard in school and challenged the artistic side of myself. As a result, I won the Best Designer Award and improved my abilities to multitask and to lead others. Furthermore, this experience prompted me to take classes in fashion and photography, for I participated in another fashion show and constructed my online portfolio.
